Hello everyone!

I finally got around to cleaning up my 55 gallon after not using it for like 6-7 months. The goal of the tank will be to be filled with a lot of smaller community type fish ( I tried keeping a few bigger fish with plans of upgrading, but that route wasn't as fun).

I plan on finishing cleaning it up tomorrow, and will probably go pick up the first of the supplies as well.

My first question involves using Pool Filter Sand. I don't want to pay for shipping from the Internet, and know I can get a bag delivered to Ace hardware, but is there anywhere else I could get a 50 lb bag? Also is there certain brands to get and others to avoid?

Second question is would an AC 50 and Fluval 204 be enough filtration for a 55 gallon? If possible I may get an AC 70, but since I own an acrylic tank, the slot where I can fit filtration is fairly small, and will already have the 204's piping in it.

And the final question is do you all believe a bubbler is necessary?

Thanks!

Filtrations should be fine with smaller community fish like tetras and such. Pool filter sand is tough to get this time of year at pool supply stores if you live in a cold region. They typically come in 50lb bags which is way more than what you'll need for a 55, so 1 bag is all you'll need. Bubbler is not necessary because your filter will create enough surface aggitation.

Home depot has the sand, give your local store a call. Not sure what you plan on stocking in the 55, but filtration should be ok depending on fish in tank, I would opt for the ac 70. The bubbler shouldnt be needed unless you like the look.

Make sure you wash your sand before adding to the tank. Any swimming pool store should have filter sand @ $8/ 50LBs.

underrated type oftank, I love my 225 with the monsters but I have a 120 in my bedroom thats a community type set up. Sand some plants and lots of wood and rocks.

I`m growing out some community fish for my big tank but also a bunch of nice lookingfish too. I have...

6x albino black widdow tetra
5x australian rainbow
5x congo tetra
4x Dolphin Barb
2x Cigar shark
2x Guinacara sp.
1x megaladorus uronoscopus (Irwini catfish)

sure its not exactly monster but its beautiful to look at and no worries about aggression

you could try finding it at a pool place or lowes or home depot. good luck with it. lowes had some last time i checked. be sure to post pics when its up and going

Thanks for the responses everyone!

I'm about to measure the gap left on the tank, hopefully an AC 70 will fit.

And I think I'll check out a couple stores tomorrow for the PFS.
