Apparently the water in my town is full of heavy metals. I did a small water change but never added the dechlorinator like I usually do.
The next morning 4 dead baby rhoms.

I stopped by Pedro's today, he's got a nice selection. I've narrowed it down to an adult rhom or a single piraya. What do you guys suggest?? IMG_20170611_065108.jpg

What size tank are you looking at and what size is the rhom? Higher likelihood of the rhom being less skittish than the piraya, but that piraya will get big quick versus slow growth on the rhom.

The rhoms were about 5-6", the pirayas 2-3". Going in a 55. I'll upgrade to a 120 when needed.
I'm leaning towards a black diamond because it was beautiful but pirayas are better eaters imo and that would be more interesting.

Anyways gonna pick him up today. I'll post some pics.

A 120g will last the rhom for life and the 55g will last probably a couple years as at 5-6in they only grow about .5in a year.

The piraya will very quickly out grow the 55g and the 120g. Piraya grow large in home aquaria with some specimens hitting from 16-20in. The absolute minimum for a piraya is probably a 180g or potentially a 240g. Rhoms dont grow past 11-12in in captivity so 120g-180g is suitable.

One other thing to keep in mind is that piraya are more sensitive to rhoms and are extremely susceptible to HITH. You will need pristine water to prevent HITH. Only large rhoms or susceptible to HITH.

Too bad about your rhoms. I bought a little canister filter at lowes for $20 that screws onto the gooseneck for the showerhead. According to the instructions, the filter removes most heavy metals and chlorine, but I still treat the water. I have an irritans that I bought from Pedro. It is about 4 1/2" now. Good luck with your next fish, and would avoid drinking or cooking with your tap water, if it is so unhealthy for fish.

Thanks man. My little guys had just settled in nicely before I poisoned them.
I'm definitely gonna test my tap water and take appropriate steps to get it filtered properly. Not trying to give my kids Flint Michigan water.

Went with the piraya. No solid reason really, just a whim.IMG_20170613_193035.jpg
