im currently looking to start making my sump/refugium for my 75 marine tank. i wanted to have a section for my heater, a section for my return back to the tank, and inbetween those two sections have a nice deep sand bed with live rock on top. i would ultimately like to make it kind of a separate tank with maybe some corals eventually and have some scavengers(emerald crabs, ghost shrimp, etc) to help keep the refuge clean. has anyone ever made their filter a secondary tank to the main display tank so when someone wants to look at your filter you just have another tank with a couple fish or scavengers in there? i want to have a bunch of live rock in my main tank, but also get some in the sump/refuge. i am willing to do up to a 55 gallon tank for the sump/refuge. are ballasts necessary? and do i absolutely need to drill the tank in order to have an external pump back up to the tank or can i just route pvc out of the tank to the pump?

and maybe make it a breeding area for my ghost shrimp so i dont have to keep buying saltwater ghost shrimp at like 3 for $5 or whatever they are.

first suggestion have 3 compartment's for your sump compartment 1 for the tank water to come into with your protein skimmer and heater, which flow's to compartment 2 with your sand, live rock or rubble and macro algae NO fish, hermit crab's, or shrimp you'll defeat the purpose of a fuge. last compartment for the return pump and get just a regular PC light to run on reverse daylight over the Fuge part and your gold. Any question's send me a private message.

sorry i was trying to post the picture in the thread but not working out to well lol. but anyway this is what i was thinking of doing. since i will have the sand in there i want the feed into the refuge section and the feed out of it to be up top so the sand doesnt get all stirred up. and fully submersible pumps, what do people think of them for marine systems? i just want to veer away from having to drill this sump tank since i have NO experience what so ever doing this and dont know of a pet store close to me that offers cutting the holes out for you.

i just know some people have had good experiences with them and some have had bad so im looking to get whatever has less bad experiences so i can make my first sump/refuge a good experience so i will want to do this in the future
