Definitely check Liveaquaria out. They have sections of both beginner and smaller tank fish. You can see what will fit and how hard it is to keep. Then you can make a list of what you want to do and we can give you input on what will and won't work.

haha well be somewhat specific, your budget and the amount of space in your tank are the two things that can hold you back

this isnt my first tank or anything ive been fishkeeping for quite awhile it's just my first saltwater. I'm not suree if i want to do a reef setup just because im not sure if i want to put all the money into buying abunch of different corals because i know if i start i wont be able to stop until i think it looks really good. but i'm not sure. I've done alot of searching and stuff i just dont even know where to begin on ideas for the tank as far as stocking.

if i were you, and this is what i did, i set up a 29 gallon as my first tank just go i could get used to the whole sw deal because its a lot harder than fw the more you get into it but at first its pretty simple patience is key, anyways i got the 29 cycled had everything set up the way i liked it and then i added my first fish which i still wont let go of lol, golden damsel yellow tails, Sgt majors these guys got me into it and then i bought a few mushroom corals and learnt more on coral care then got some zoo's then some anemones then i got myself a clown and filled up my tank with more coral work once i got into the hang of adding supplements and keeping up with the extra work, i then upgraded to a nice 75 gal moved everything over, picked up a bronze copper tang and kept building up to a 120 with all the present stock plus a spotted snake eel hoped that helped a bit, take it easy nothing comes good when you cut corners in sw its all about taking your time and letting things work in their own pace

:iagree: If this wasn't your first setup, I would suggest maybe looking into setting up a tank based on the bays of your local area. I think that would be something different that not alot of people have, plus your stock would be free and anything that you can legally harvest from the waters. Just a thought.

haha that would be a cool tank addikted! and bazinga why a 29 gallon instead of the 40? i mean i have both but i just dont see why. just different shapes in the tank. the 29 is tall and wahtever and the 40 is more ground space but not as tall

I think it was meant more as a statement for stocking. Basically take your time and make wise stocking selections. at liveaquaria.net they have a SW Beginners fish section so you can pick fish that are more hardy and won't die with the littlest tank change. I have a 29 gallon and currently have a clownfish and a watchmen goby. I plan on adding another clown and possibly a dwarf angel if it will play nice with others. I have no idea about coral yet....

And I might be mistaken but I SWEAR the original post said 20 gallon not 40 gallon. Of course my eyes could have just been deceiving me...

i referred to the 29 because thats what i started with if you want go with the 40 its not much different, just dont start with something big lol, start small get used to the things you need to do and then slowly add and work up your tank
