125 gallon long established filtered with canister and two large HOB, nitrate was 40 all other zero except PH was 6.2 KH o-40. I change water 50-60% on weekends. So a climb to 40 nitrate is expected by weeks end.
Anyhow 6 cichlids, 5 tetras, 4 corys, and 4 clown loaches, and a 8 inch pleco.

So 6 oclock all is well , i feed hikari sinking, and hikari carnivore, wardley shrimp pellets, and tetra granules.

I walk back in at 8pm and this fish is near the top spiraling or twirling head up.

This fish is the Alpha, he has the most color and moves with everything keeping in check, never actually fighting. it is an SP44 Cichlid / rock kribensis

The end he is normally in something has dug out an area, perhaps to spawn. I have a pair of bumblebees the same size as him. I would guess it were them.

So i dont know what happened.

He either gorged on the food, got into it with the pair? As they will catch the wafers and pellets whole but usually spit them until they soften up.

I went ahead and double dosed the tank with prime and did a 50 percent change asap.
I caught him and put him in a breeder / fry box and put him back in his normal hang out. hes not spiralling in it but kinda laying on his side head up.

2 things come to mind that are different, i was going to pick up some cichlid buffer because since i added purigen 500ml in the canister i feel the ph drops.
I also started a few days ago dicing up some raw thawed shrimp and putting it in there and they love it.

Anyone got any ideas... ?

What species of cichlid? Pics?

Could be the shrimp. Im not really familiar with any african cichlids but I think there not supposed to have anything with alot of fat or protein. So try cutting that out for a while and see if there's a change.

I'm not sure the shrimp are the cause - especially since it's only been a few days, but I agree that they are not the optimal food.

Any changes since yesterday?

Also, other than the behavior change, is there any actual damage or wounds on the fish? Is it pooping, if so what color, stringy, etc.? Any other fish acting strange?

I still say give it more food with vegetable matter in it you never know it could be bloat
