I've been in the hobby for over a decade and in this business for one year too many. But out of all this time I have yet to find the stats on survival for each species of ray. I know some are a little more sensitive and some that are simple as heck but I haven't found a source that describes each species on ease, success in the aquaria yet there chances on survival. Also, what are the chances of pups born in a tanks survival?

The reason I ask is because I'm looking on getting two ray, hopefully hystrix but if not them motoros cause both I have interacted with and heard great success in keeping. Also I am looking to possibly try breeding one or both of these species in the long run.

First of all the best of luck to you finding a hystrix.

Second I highly doubt that anyone keeps a tally like you are asking about. Of course there are generalities like motoros are hardier then retics, but again there is no exact number there.

Also given the fact large that adult rays of ANY species are hard to come by clearly shows that the vast majority of ALL rays sold do not make it to adulthood.

Point taken, mainly I just wanted to find out how many end up actually dying after a few weeks or so of being acclimated into a tank that has no param issues

They dont "just die" IMO a healthy ray when purchased will stay a healthy ray once correctly acclimated and in a tank with good water conditions...

Ok, guess I got the wrong gist of things when it came to researching the stats bout survival in the aquaria.

if you asked every ray seller and importer the numbers would be different with everyone... one person will say no problems with ray X and another will say terrible luck...

True, my experience with rays from wholesalers are pretty good, it's just I'm a lil sketch on spending close to 2-300 for a nice ray so trying to stick with the basics first. :D

i have had my hystrix over 5 years
and my leos almost 4 i think they will live a long time hopefully if you are very good about doing mantinence and takeing care ofthem long term!!!!

Haha, only the best for my fish, usually 2wice weekly 25% water changes for my large tanks. But this tank will have a dialysis unit on it so I can keep water clean, but with less over all water changes.
