In the last 3-4 weeks both my stealth heaters started to make a somewhat loud single click sound. Both heaters are about 7 months old and are in different tanks. Has anyone else had this happen and is it a sign that the heaters are going out?

never heard of a stealth doing that... maybe ccdoido is right... r u at the min water level line?

The only part that isn't under water is the adjustment knob. I figured that the noise was from it turning on and off but why is it all of a sudden is it so loud when it does it? I just find it strange that they were bought at the same time and now 6 months later both are making the same noise.

You probably didn't notice the heaters clicking when you first got them.

If you get a heater that has an blinking indicator you'll know; when the lights goes on/off you hear a loud click
but that indicator are on glass heaters, not black stealths

Trust me I would of noticed, the tank(s) is in the main room less than 10' from my couch and computer. To give you an idea on the sound...it sounds like when a floating glass thermometer makes contact with the glass of the tank.

o.k. if you're not gonna listen and take my advice, go ahead and get yourself new heaters.
which would be a waste of money.

it ticks and clicks. period
you didn't notice because of the filter running and the air pump and the powerhead, etc.
it's in the main room, you must have alot of people in there talking and making noise. and your computer's typing noise covered it up

That sound is the internal thermostat turning the power on and off as needed to properly regulate the temperature of the tank.

I'm sure there is some variability in the volume that these heaters make from item to item, but to answer your question, NO, it is not a definitive indicator that the heater is going bad.

You may want to call the manufacturer and discuss with them if you are overly concerned. That's what their 'customer service' line is for ;) I know that they come with a warranty and I wouldn't put it past them to send you a new one if you really think it is going bad.

I called marineland this morning and the lady said that they should NOT make any noise what so ever and if they do then something is wrong.
