i know they are shatter proof - and they have auto on/off....

does that mean you don't have to turn them off when doing a water change? or should you still turn them off/on when doing large water changes?

thanks!

I have 2 on my tank.I never turn them off.Don't know if you should tho.

I never turn mine off either, I believe they have an auto-shut off feature when its not fully submersed.

i have ALL my equipment plugged into a powerstrip except the lights. i turn the powerstrip off while cleaning. I dont take the chance with the auto off.

I have heard a couple of posts where they did not turn off and thus melted. I have a mix of about 50% Stealth and 50% other heaters (glass) in my tanks so I just unplug them all automatically.

Burt:)

I never used to shut mine off before but I noticed once when doing a 75% WC the I had water sizzling from when being splashed on, the heater was about 90% out of the water.

I now always unplug my heaters. :)

I haven't turned my off during water changes, but I did notice one day that there was a little bit of smoke coming off of it when the water was half way down the shaft. So I just put the heater lower on the tank now.
