So I have a 30 gal. tank with a AQ50 and a biowheel 20 on it, the tank houses 4 juvi cichlids, 2 red zebras and 2 yellow labs.
Earlier this week, the AQ50 was running weak so i decided i was just gonna take the hole thing apart and clean it before adding new foam and carbon. As the inserts were past due for changing.
Instead I decided what the hell im gonna try steaming everything clean (foam and carbon and all) and see what happens.
The steamer did exactly as i thought and really had all of the inserts looking great and clean. Now 4 days later the tank is just as nice and clear as it was before and the filter is running like new.
And no dead fish!:headbang2

thats a great way to uncycle your filters.. great...

I'm just kidding. Next time though, just fill a bucket with tank water and give it a good shake and wipe down. And hey, at least you didn't steam both your filters.

Grats on losing almost all of your biological filtration...

Thanks for the congratulations douche bags!
I took all this in mind before I did this btw.
seeing as how if I were to change the foam and carbon i would lose the bacteria anyways, i trusted that my well established tank would be able to handle it well.
and guess what, it did.

i was gonna rinse through in tank water but did not feel the job would be adequate as the foam was very full but water in tank was still crystal clear.
