Is there any reason why one would not use a steel 55gal drum as filter?
Rust, but in a planted pond system what would the issue with rust/iron specifically?

We used epoxy-coated welded steel box for a pond filter previously; I'm wondering if I can forgo the epoxy?

The drum was used for shipping of juice concentrate; however, there is some spot-rust inside now.
Intention is to fill with media & submerge into the pond, punched inlets at bottom & pump at top/surface. Reason for the question is that these standard steel are the only I've found of the the correct height. Alt would be to cut & re-weld an LDPE 60... which I can do, but would be a headache.

If it's any rust I wouldn't use it. Stainless non corrosive steel would be a safe option.

Doesn't rust leave a oily film on the surface of the water? I vote NO....reminds me too much of the Exxon Valdez
