I've been making multi layer stencils for a few years and I'm wondering if anyone has done this.
The thought came up earlier when I was trying to find something I had available to use as a background for a 60 gallon I have. In this pic I took about 10 minutes of my precious time and freehanded this with a can of primer/$1 black paint to see how the light/dark would show up from behind the glass.

Apparently it looks like Chynas clit so.. In short the high/lowlights didn't show up the way I hoped so I thought why not cut a stencil and put it right on the back of the tank? I think the differences in tone would show up a lot better being painted directly to glass from my experience painting backgrounds.
I'm going to give this a shot, just wanted to throw this out there in case someone else wants to try it out cause my progress may be slow
