hello all. i was talking to my parents the other day who told me there is no longer any chlorine in bleach and they use something else now. i was wondering can i still use bleach to sterilize driftwood ? will dechlorinator still work on it ? is there any other way of removing the bleach after its cleaned ?

the driftwood i have i found at my cottage and it was submerged completly when i found it so i need soemthing to sterilize it and its too large to boil

acording to the bottle the bleach contains sodium hypochlorite now
will standard dechlor work on this?

I am not aware of dechlorinators having any effect on bleach... No where on the bottle of Prime does it mention doing so nor does Seachems website mention this quality... if it did, I'm sure they would advertise it as such...

To my knowledge the way to make something aquarium safe after cleaning with bleach is to rinse it extremely well to wash the bleach out. I've also only heard of mild bleach/water mixtures being used for cleaning aquarium items.

Personally I do not use bleach…

i was aware that at some point in the past bleach was just a really strong concentration of chlorine in water therefore standard dechlorinators would be able to remove it apparently this is no longer the case

Edit: i read this on wiki "Sodium hypochlorite degrades quickly, primarily to sodium chloride"

if this is the case simply leaving it for a while would make it safe for a fish tank

Thanks… you prompted me to do a bit of research…

Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is the active ingredient in the gallon of bleach I have in my pantry… The Cl in NaClO is chlorine… Na is Sodium and O is Oxygen… higher concentrations of Sodium hypo chlorite is what is used for “chlorinating” water in both swimming pools and water treatment plants…

So it seems I might have been wrong and that a dechlorinator might ‘neutralize’ bleach. Since this is all new to me I cannot confirm it will or suggest any dosage levels to achieve it…
