Is there anyone had any sucess raising these pretty unique fish? I have had two of them and they both died shortly after I have puchased them. The water quality in all my tanks are pretty much perfect. Do they have specific water requirements? If anybody knows anything please let me know.

I also have had the same luck. Had one and within a few days it had died. the water quality in my tank was right on the money.

The water quality might have been correct, but what temperature were your tanks?

Are they brackish like a lot of othe sturgeons? I saw that a LFS store was for sale, but I couldn't see high enough on the rack to get a good look.

ya these are cold water fish right??? from what ive seen/read they are good pond fish

I think the water temp is about 77. What does it need to be? The LFS told me that he would be fine in my regular community tank with no special requirements. He said that they have had them for a while and they were all doing fine and should be ok. I guess he really didn't know what he was talking about. I just don't understand why they survived at the LFS and not in my tank.

put this way, we kept them out doors in the UK, and thrived in a pond even when it iced over...

It is frequently an issue that Sturgeon will not last long in Aquaria. It is often the case where even a seemingly healthy well fed fish will just drop dead for no particular reason. The exact reason for this may be a combination of factors including Water, temp, feeding etc.

The fact is these fish are not easy to deal with in aquaria conditions. it is best to avoid them unless you have suitable large outdoor facilities to raise the fish in. Young sturgeon (sterlet) are very sensitive to a variety of enviornmental and physiologic influences and should not be considered "aquarium" fish until they reach at least 2 foot. This of coarse also makes them rather difficult fish to house in aquaria anyhow.
