In all my years of owning fish this has been the most difficult time ever. I purchased 2 small FH almost a month ago. They both ate the first night then none after. I occasionally saw them but not much and wouldn't eat no matter what I put in the tank. Suddenly one of them started swimming crazy in the tank and eventually ended up bent in a curve and could only swim in circles. His fins were pretty rouged up and knew he wasn't going to make it..and he didn't. Now the one I have left..he still hides. Sometimes I can see him hiding as its towards the front of the tank..but other times he could disappear for days like he has these last few days. I finally got him to eat monday but only if he saw it go by where he was hiding and would dart after it then back to his hiding spot. I've not been able to get him to eat since.
I have seen both fish poop white once each. The one that is living has a white dot or bump on his fin. I did get in that fishes way unknowingly while cleaning the tank so after that his fin was split but its not where the white bump is. His anal fin I noticed the very tip is missing. But not seen signs of Tail rot.
I'm also having a nitrate issue that I cannot get to go down. This tank has been running for years.. I've done a lot of gravel cleaning and water changes and its not affected the readings at all..not even a little. I thought it might be my tester is old but the new one is saying the same. I've gone back to the pet store and the guy recommended prime. I was desperate..but that's not worked either. My only other guess is that my tank is going through a cycle as the readings for nitrates and ammonia are 0 (or whatever the lowest number is). About two or three months ago I had to buy a new filter as the one I had burned up. I changed the substrate..I neglected the tank for a long time..the substrate was sand back then..and the crap would not get clean..so I just got fed up and changed it to what I've been wanting for years..all the while keeping an 8 year old cichlid in the tank ( he passed).
I wish I could post a picture but I'd have to take the tank apart and stress him out more. He's so very timid that I'm trying to back off so he would come around. Im getting kinda frustrated and worried. I see everyone's pics of a months growth and mine isn't even eating.
I purchased clout.which was for the previous fish but died before i could use it. But haven't used it and wondering if I should treat the tank to be safe? Im at a loss...and just want to enjoy the fish
