Hi!! I have 2 questions. How does sting of stingray grow from proximal end or distal end?. Can I put a protector in the sting like seventh picture?. I am shop assistant in a pet shop, where I sell, pick up, shipping different stingrays. Thanks.

the sting protection you are talking about is just air line put over the sting for shipping from overseas

a good shop owner or importer should remove the air line as soon as they get the rays

its not something that should be left on long term

The stinging barb grows out for the tail very similar to a tooth growing out from the gumline. Usually a new barb grows in under the old barb and forces it off. I have seen the new barb grow in over the top from time to time.

The barb grows toward the end of the tail and faces back. Typically tubing is placed on the barb for shipping. It could damage the skin covering the barb causing an infection. I would highly advise against this unless you are shipping the ray. I spoke to a vet at a public aquarium that has a stingray petting pond and they actually cut the barbs to protect the public. I have done this to my female only because her barb had a fungal infection after getting caught in a net during a move. She was perfectly fine and was eating 3 minutes after I put her back in the tank. I would only do this if you know what you are doing.
