i believe that all forms of freshwater sting ray are illegal in california and also that goes the same for all forms of pirayas, so my question is why are so many people are selling them and no one makes a big deal about it but when comes to an asian arowana people get all bent out of shape

Not all types of FW stingrays are illegal on CA, only those in the family Potamotrygonidae. Dasyatid stingrays, including some of the FW whiprays are legal in CA, but they're known to be very delicate and are rarely imported.

My guess is it's easier for forum staff to keep track of federally-regulated species than it is to keep track of each different state's regulations, which can and do vary greatly depending on jurisdiction. For example, fathead minnows, aka rosey reds, are regulated in WA but not anywhere else to my knowledge. Bichirs are regulated in HI. Arowanas (except silvers) in FL. ATFs and FW barracuda in TX. It's quite complicated keeping track of all of these.

we try and put a stop to all illegal fish sales no matter what it is, asian aros being banned in the US are easier to spot where as other state banned fish are not so easy especialy if no location is in the profile.
you do get a feel for where people are from though.

And, you're wrong about ray and piranha CA sales not being made a big deal. Those sales posts are deleted as soon as a mod sees them or a member alerts us of them. And, thanks to some of our members, the mods are becoming more and more expert in individual state's restricted species listings.
