Hi, I noticed this white patch on my ray. It really came out of nowhere so my guess is he scratched it on some of the decor in the tank (some drift wood and rocks). But I would like other opinions just to be sure its not some kind of skin disease. It still acts fine and eating well. Any help is appreciated.

Cool tank, love the stock.

It looks to me like it could be either of those 2 things.

You will need to cover your heaters for sure. If the marks in question are not from a heater, there is a good chance the heaters could be an issue once the Ray gets bigger.

If the pleco has a taste for your rays slime coat, you may need to get it away from your ray. Often they won’t break this habit on their own.

One last thing you may need to consider is, are those rocks sharp? If so you may need to pull them too. Rays are always moving and getting themselves into things they probably shouldn’t. Lol. So if there is something that can harm them they most likely will find it in their endless search of food.

Ok thanks a lot for the help! I’ll start with covering the heaters and taking out any sharp rocks. If I notice anymore or worse white spots I’ll move the pleco out. Thanks again!

No problem.

When I look at the marks it looks to me that the pleco was the culprit here. The inconsistency of the marks and somewhat circular shaping of it. I’d say 98% sure it was the pleco.

As for the heaters, I just grabbed some black pvc and drilled a whole bunch of holes in it and zip tied it to the cord. The down side was it wants to float now so you may need to figure that part out. I just ended up tucking it behind my fx6 intake.

Yeah the pleco would make since. I've had the ray for about 3 months with no issues. I added the pleco about 2 weeks ago and this came up. I never thought about them eating the slim coat like that. I'm still going to cover the heaters and check rocks for safety so I don't have future issues.
