heaven is my home
hey guys, i have been searching the forums and havent found anything. my lil female motoro on the under side of her disk is inflamed really bad. she sits on the bottom trying not to let her belly touch the bottom. i had black tahitian moon sand in the tank for the last couple of months and i took it out a few days ago. also she is not eating like she used to for the last two weeks. what is causing her disk to be inflamed and loss of appetite? parasite? I dont know. any advice would be great cause i hate seeing her in discomfort. thanks in advance

isn't tahitian moon sand silica? i heard silica was bad for rays

I would check your ammonia readings. With you removing the sand, you prob put alot of bio in your tank that was trapped below the sand bed.
I try to avoid getting having any ammonia trapped in my sand bed by sifting it every week.

She could have ammonia burn. this would also be one reason she may not be eating.
Check the ammonia levels in your tank and then do a 50% water change...

Hope that helps.

Yeh I agree with the rest she can have ammonia burn....And from experience with tahitian sand I wouldn't use it cuz it sticks to the ray and is to fine for them...

hey guys, thanks for the info, my ammonia is fine right now, the odd thing is, my other rays are doing fine, but they are bigger also. ive noticed for the past two weeks she hasnt been eating like she should. i thought she was just getting out-competed, but not the case. could a parasite cause this at all? if it was the sand or ammonia, wouldnt my other two rays be affected by it as well?

Snap a picture, might be bacterial.

Is it on the edge? She may havegot bitten and is stressing

not on the edge, the big male did bite her and the other girl the other day, he got tired of them messing with him. but she is healing fine from that. but its weird, she props herself with her tail and feet (dont know the scientific name), so that her belly doesnt touch the bottom. a couple of hours ago her belly was real pink but now its looking almost normal. i will try and get a vid soon

Is there any decor in the tank with them? She may have scratches herself on something (even on one of the other rays) trying to get away when she got bit.
With the stress of being bit, or maybe even a belly scratch, she may be tinder and just not wanting to eat. Alot of things can cause a ray not to want to eat.
What are you feeding them?

well a week ago i had the black tahitian moon sand with two rocks, but now its bare bottom with nothing else. i feed chopped tilapia, night crawlers and market shrimp, she goes after the food like she is starving (which she is), but she doesnt eat it, she is real active, more than the other two rays. if something doesnt change i would say she has two weeks :(
