I am new to stingrays. I've got a few of Richard Ross's books, but I have one question.

How does a stingray manage to catch an actual fish?

Especially in a tank? I mean. I don't know. Just asking.

I've never fed my rays feeders but as you know Richard Ross talks about how small eyed rays stick on the glass waiting for feeders to come by and then they trap them.
When i feed live shirmp they swim about half a foot above the ground and when they find one they jolt down and trap it in their disc. But fish are faster than shrimp so i don't know if they do the same.

I had to put my small retics in a tank before their big tank was ready. It had 4 neons in there and other fish. I had nowhere else to put the neons so I took a chance. One retic ( 11cm disc) got all the neons one by one. He pounced on them trapping them under his disc and ate them.

Sad story as they weren't meant to be feeders as I do not use live fish as food. All the other fish were fine but I guess the neons were just small enough.

it has to do alot with night time....., when the fish get sleepy and drift on the bottom...., this is when rays a re the most active anyway......

Although they will catch them during the day...., i have found that it is far more common at night....

seen it happen one too many times its cool to watch as john mentioned it is more a night time thing rule of thumb if it can fit in there mouth it is food

hi alex what shrimp do you use and where from? it sounds fun i wanna try some :headbang2

I use the regular (brine shrimp?) that you see at every fish store. You get about 20 for £1.

I do give them some feeders once and a while and they do hunt even with the lights on. They sneak up low using very little undulation of there disks behind the feeders.(usually in a bottom cornner of the tank) Then they pounce on it like a cat closing there disk all around so the feeder can't escape. P.S. yea i treat my feeders for two weeks before feeding. I also fill them to the brim with other nutritional foods befroe feeding them to the rays.
