Has anyone ever had one of their rays become injured by the heater?

I have a 8" marbled Motoro and i noticed last night he has a burn like mark on his underside at the edge of his disk.

The injury has missing skin and signs of blood although he is not bleeding and the injury itself is the size of a quarter.

I put stress coat in, hoping the aloe vera helps it heal but is this a parasite or some sort of bacterial infection. the tank is very clean and has no nitrites and zero ammonia. Is there anything I can do besides let it heal on its own?

Heater injury is pretty common, in the stickys it is written about :) You should put a heater Guard on, or put the heater somewhere the ray cant come near.

interesting. i never thought of the heat guard but it makes perfect sence, i feel stupid not thinking of that since they move everywhere. do you know if the burn will heal naturally with the excellent filtration i have or do i need to treat the tank with antibiotics? he doesnt seem to be acting strange or eating any less than usual.

Iv heard that the brand CKem works well. In particular the Cenoplex and Focus work and allow you to leave the carbon in the filters while treatment. Is this true?

i wouldnt add anything to your water. just keep it clean an keep doing frequent water changes. What substrate do u have? have seen some bad burns heal. so it can heal. this is always warned in many areas about sting ray care. so u might wanna check out the stingray forum on here an read all the sting ray care threads to avoid some of these common mistakes. good luck

heater guards are a must or a better way is to just put the heater in the sump if you have one. Do some reseach on rays. If this mistake was made you will find many more to come. There area all sorts of forums on basic guides to keeping rays. Also books available on-line or at your local book or lfs.

I have some live sand that came in a bag with live bacteria that the guys at aquascape said they use for stingrays in their personal tanks so i bought it but forgot the exact name. yea the book i have said nothing about burns strangly. Thanks for all the advice guys.

No offense to the OP here, but this is another perfect reason why pple should read the stickies... If you can read the stickies, then there will be alot mroe preventable things you can do to keep ur rays happy and healthy..

Heater burns happen all the time with new ray keepers

It's not the burn that's the problem it's the shock that sometimes kills the rays after a burn

Sometimes it will heal up fine and some times it won't

Heater guards are cheap less than $10
