how long have you had him? the white outline around his disk is clasic for two things, tank mates picking on him, or 2 amonia burn from transport. Just because a ray has a fat tail DOESNT mean that its healthy. that last pic posted really looks like he was curling up.

like i said, angle of the picture and the fact the ray was moving when i took the pic might make appear to be curling
i could show you more pics but i cant be arsed... the ray is perfectly healthy

Seen the Ray in question only today,looks perfectly healthy to me,jumping on prawns like theres no tomorrow.In my experience ive never seen a Ray feed even in the early stages of death curl.Turkyboy i can see where you are coming from by the pictures,in a couple of them it does look like curl but its just regenerated disc tissue with very little pigmentation,often the colour comes later though its very often never as clear as the origional pattern......i think your right,physical damage and possibly exposure to ammonia has resulted in the discolouration around the outer disc.
 
im not trying to start a fight at all, and thats good that the ray is healthy, i was just stating what i saw.
