i was just wundering if Utah oolitic sand would be good for FW rays .... as u can tell by the name we have plenty of it out here all i have to do is just drive , sift, collect, wash and use it!
if its good for rays tell me and if anyone has any sug. about collecting it then pleas let me know.
and if anyone from SLC wants to go with me then send me a PM i'm down to do this any time!

as long as it wont mess with the PH in crazy ways it should be no problem

Is this the same aragonite sand used for reef/saltwater aquariums? If so, it will most likely raise the pH of the water and increase the buffering capacity.

I believe aragonite starts to dissolve at a pH around 7.2 plus or minus. Should check the pH of your water out of the tap. It may fluctuate and cause stress for the ray.

Did you ever go collect the sand??? I am looking for a "cheap" alternative for my cichlid tanks, ECO complete is getting expensive. If so, where did you go to collect it? How hard was it to clean? Have you had any negative affects from using it?

I am about 40 minutes from the lake so I was thinking about going for a drive to collect some.

I really would not take the risk, surely driving 40 miles each way and the time taken outweighs the savings of buying prepared sand plus the cost of a lost life if a fish dies.
