stingray stinger

hi there,

can anyone teach me about stingray stings? why do some ray have two sharp things on their tails (presumably the sting) and some only have one? and how does the process of them changing their sting goes? do they "shed" the entire sting? one of my rays recently had his sting become shaky and the next thing i know his entire sting was on the floor of the tank. im not sure if some tank mate yanked it out or it just shed it naturally.. thanks in advance!

they shed their stingers naturally. They grow a replacement before the other one sheds, which is why you sometimes see them with 2 stingers.

If yours dropped the stinger before another was coming in, it came out prematurely.

Make sure to remove from tank, will happen about 2-3 times a year.

yup got it out already. but is it supposed to be shaky before completely dropping out like a tooth? no chance that a tank mate damaged it?

Ya they become lose when they are about to fall out.

If ive understood correctly they are still venomous after they are shed

Only if the venom sheath is still on it, but ive heard you can still get toxins in you even if the venom sheath is not present. I just boil mine to be safe because i keep them.
