I know sand is ideal.

Active flora sells a product that looks like this.

Any thoughts?

I think fluval has black sand or something that’s pricey

As long as there are no sharp edges you should be good unless you go for a finer gravel

Yea, it’s more like the bottom picture. Just planning substrate for new tank and don’t want to eliminate any species

I used sand in all my tanks earlier. But im drifting more and more to barebottomtanks now. Easier to maintain. For my rays i have barebottom and pretty much no decor at all. In my new large tank i will have one large piece of mangroove and im thinking of adding maybe 75kg of sand and 25kg of coral sand. That will prob five me 0.5cm of substrate all over the tank. Tank is 210x180/100x100cm

While I love garnet sand and run a hefty 70kg or so in my 1,000g; all of my smaller tanks are barebottom. Since all my tanks minus one are acrylic, I've learned the detriment of stingrays + sand + acrylic all too familiarly. If you're using glass, I'd go with shallow sand bed if you want to see the rays acting like they would in nature in sand. If you don't care about such enrichment, barebottom is infinitely easier.

it scratches?

Ahh, small round pebbles it is.... or sumthin glass later, hate to spend 9k n get scratched to heck....

These motoros seem to enjoy the rounded pebble type. They chomp on it when excited for a feeding. I thought they would stir it up enough to keep it clean but it needs to be vacuumed at least every other week.
