This might be a dumb question since Rays are big and like to be all over the aquarium. Can I keep rays in a tank without a lid/cover?

Thanks

why would u want to? I dont think its a good idea but I dont know for sure

Although rays are not jumpers as such, they love to go up and down the glass and sometimes as far as some of their body out the water
They can misjudge themselves and fall out so i would not recommend an open tank
I would also recommend that ray tanks should have a lip right around as it helps tp prevent accidents

The guy I bought my tank from bought fairly heavy glass lids, turns out even eurobraced his female had jumped out. He scooped her up and put her back in okay, but you don't wanna deal with that...

Depending on where you keep the tank you could get massive evaporation without a glass lid, there have been many posters on here where rays have fallen out of uncovered tanks. I love the look of an open and braceless tank but I wouldn't do it with Rays

Thanks for the advice! that's what I figure since they're always all over the place

damn... I didn't know they were that strong.

was in the exact same situation as you, never liked the lid or canopy look, like everything rimless/clean .

Me too, that's what I want... But I'm also worried about evaporation.

Yeah, that crossed my mind. I'll keep in an office and don't know if that's the right thin to do now that I think it through...

Thank you guys! this really answers my question.

what i did in the end was get a custom tank build and glued on a glass brace on the inside rim around the whole tank , still gives its a clean/ rimless look and the rays cant slide up and out from the tank.

I once had a male Leo that really loved to go up and down the side of the tank, really hard. I made a "note to self" that this could be a problem. But wouldn't you know it, I forgot to put the lid down one day at the back of the tank. I came home to find the ray dried out on the floor like a pancake. So, yes, beware of rays jumping out of your tank if you don't have a lid and if the water level is high.
