This summer I'm setting up a ray tank.
I was thinking about having the tank 8x4 feet. But how tall does it have to be? The tank will have motoro rays.

Depends on size. If this is for juvi rays you'll only need about a foot or so but if it's for adults I'd go with 3 feet.

I don't think height is a big issues wit rays. I've seen plenty of rays kept in shallow tanks with a huge footprint without any problems. So I say 18" being a good minimum height on a ray only tank.

my 2ft diameter motoro ray likes to hang out on the side of the tank and glides on it. I think it needs to be tall enough to prevent it accidentally jumping across especially if tank doesn't have lids. I think at this size it can easily tilt the lid open.

Rays like to go up and down the side glass

24" tall 30" would be better

I would say 24" as well would be ideal. If you're buying new or having custom built, you're not going to gain anything by cutting down lower than 24".

Thanks for the replies! It will be at least 24".

Like I said 24" min

But if you want mid water tank mates go 30" tall as it gives them room to keep out of each other's way

Min. 24", 30" optimal....any taller is a bonus as others have said...rays like to swim up the sides of the tank therefore better have good lid as you're be surprise how powerful adult rays can be.
