I have a Rec Ray in a tank with an Arowana. The Arowana has gotten fin rot and I would like to know the best way to treat this without doing harm to the Ray. I don't have the means to quarantine either fish and just did an 80% water change.
Not sure how you are about catching your aro and treating topically but Methylene Blue works great on bacterial infections topically. Just treat the damage directly and place back in tank. You wont have to treat the whole system and no risk to ray. Secondly you need to find out the cause which is uaually bad water.
Yup, prazi will help with parasites, not so much fin rot.
Melafix seems to help with healing fin rot. Though I'm sure some will say it is snake oil, I use it, and I like the smell (strange?) It is ray safe at recommended dosage. The cuase of the rot needs to be dealt with though.
Sorry for not getting back with post I checked a few hours later and didnt realy see any response so I done some resurch and have completed a 7 day treatment of Melafix. Poor water quality and stress is most likely the cause. I am in the middle of setting up a 600 gallon tank which will be there new home. My filters on my old 125G setup are felling and I'm down to 1 working powerhead. however I didnt want to put a lot of money into fixing a settup that I was just going to turn into a sump so I'm trying to slide by without byeing new filers. I now have the Rec arowana 2 Jack and 2 angle fish and a pleco I a 55G hospital tank (my arowana is small) This was only suppose to have been for like 2-3 days while converting the 125 into a sump for the new tank. However after getting everything settup the Bulkhead leaked, I have new ones ordered but it will now be like Oct 2-3 before I can get the new tank up and running. Im doing fequent WC and praying I get get these fish though till there new home is ready. The fish fins dont have any noticable infection now however they are still very ragged is this to be expected Amm 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate was like 40-80 now have it down to around 20
