Stingrays & Discus together in a 180G

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They make a good combination as they occupy different areas of the tank (rays bottom, discus middle) and require the same water chemistry and conditions. They both need slightly acidic and very clean water. You will need to have your filtration system and water management properly organised.

This is especially important with your combo as rays eat a lot, thus polluting the water, and both fish require crystal clear water.

Not a project for a beginner, but well worth it if you can pull it off.

Good luck!

dependent on if you keep large/small discus wit rays. your rays might shread your small discus (2.5in or less) and then eat it. i personally experienced this, very sad. luckily my ray only ate 2 discus before i found out. large discus are expensive but small discus runs a risk of being eaten.

I have my discus in with a shortnose gar and two royal pleco's no problems as of yet they dont both one another and occupy different areas and eat different types of food

I have that exact set up with 2 angel fish and 1 arrowana. My discus like to pick at shrimp that my ray hasnt found yet and the even sit right on top of him and he dosnt mind. So far the combo has worked awsomely, I keep a 7in motoro and a blue snakeskin 4in and a large red snakeskin thats about 6in.

When you keep fish with rays eventually they will get eaten, if your willing to risk the money that the discus will cost you. Then you might want to put them in a growout tank until they get bigger. Another good alternative to discus are non-aggressive geo species. They're cheaper and look very nice with rays.

Exactly even if the fish are too big to fit in their mouths its like waving a lolipop in front of a little kid eventually they are going to grab for it. Besides rays learn fast at one point I was trying to keep some peaceful cichlids with my ray and eventually he learned to hold back when the food was dropped in and when the cichlids went for the food he would pounce on them if it wasn't so expensive and no risk of disease then I would do this all the time it was so cool to see.
