Ok so I have a 162 gallon fish tank ((6 ' wide X 18" deep X 28 3/4" high). What ray would you reccommend for this tank? I was originally going to do motoros and build a pond for them when they get larger, but if for whatever reason in a year I can't build a pond in a couple of years I don't want to do this. That left me thinking about retics, I can purchase retics at 3-4 inches for a lot cheaper than I could purchase motoros that where a little bigger. What are good tankmates for retics that would be suitable for this tank? Also how many retics could I have in this tank? The filtration is 2 AC 110s and a cascade 1200 canister. Thanks

Rays do best with other Rays.. Tankmates + Juvie Rays = Lack of food.

That tank should be fine for a couple retics for a year or two.. keep in mind their long tail adds to the total length, so they aren't THAT much smaller than other juvie rays.

Competition for food will be an issue with tankmates.. juvie retics tend to only snack on tiny foods (tiny mouths) like black worms, bloodworms, and red wigglers for quite some time. (unsuccessful in 3 months of weaning attempts) If you have tankmates, I almost guarantee you can't get the retics enough food. If you overfeed the tank to compensate for this, you will have water quality issues because 160g isn't as big as it seems..

I have a 125 with a retic and several fish. He's in with Rainbows, Discus, Angelfish, a krib, and large tetras. Something I was told wouldn't work but has worked fine for me with no murders. I've had semi-aggressive south american cichlids that would pic on him and the other fish such as small Uaru and chocolate cichlid and they've been removed immediately. The guy who sold me the ray has been selling fish for 30+ years and has set me with good info. People say don't keep rays in small tanks but if your waters well filtered and clean its a matter of ethics whether you want to keep a ray in a tank with not much room. He has a retic that he's had in a 55 planted tank for over 2 years so its not a matter of will they stay alive, but if you want to keep them in small or large enclosure. There's no law saying you can't keep a couple rays in a 162, maybe retics, hysteric, or yepezi. I've learned that with this hobby you can take peoples advice but you'll always get differing info so you can either do what someone or a book tells you to do, or you can be innovative and see what works for you and expect to take risks and be able to provide the fish with adequate living if it doesn't work out.
Hope this helps

Also, I feed my ray and fire eel mostly earthworms but when I feed him black worms I feed the other fish first then use a filter tube and squirt the worms into a bowl at the bottom of the tank using a turkey baster. You may want to get the rays first then introduce other tankmates once the rays are established.

2 retics with a gold severum or urau and an arowana.

i have kept uaru.a with rays they peck at the rays eyes but uaru.f are fine if you can find them :D

So I could get 2 retics for this tank. About the uaru T1KARMANN are you saying they make good tankmates or bad? And about an arowna I think they would get way to big for this tank. Thanks for the suggestions.
