I am setting up a 30gal (36''x12''x17") cichlids and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what to stock it with and how many? First time with cichlids.

which african do you want. if you are thinking mbuna (your average LFS stock) 5-6 but that depends on your filtration, maintainance schedual and how you have the tank decorated. you'll need lots of rocks for the fish to hide in. African cichlids are very territorial. i seet my 30g up with lots of rock stacked like a salt water aquarium

If you only want cichlids, I'll recommend, 2 rams, 2 apistos, 1 convict, , and maybe some other dwarf cichlids. Theres not many things you can choose from.

Here is a good start, other than these I suggest you just do your own homework. It will be entertaining for you and that way you can get what you like the most.

Play around with these two suggestions for tank sizes. IE you can have more than what the 29 says, but stay less then the 40. (Remember it is the footprint that really matters, and have a 30 gallon long is much better than the 29.)

You should stock it with the haplochromis ruby green from lake victoria which is a very beautiful cichlid with bright vibrant colors. I have a pair with a bristlenose pleco in a 29 gallon with a lot of rocks for the female to hide. Do a search on them and you will love these. I absolutely recommend this fish.

A 30 gallon would make a nice home for a colony of Yellow labs. 2 males and 6 females.

I would go with some lelupi and some shell dwellers they would be very happy in a tank that size or some julidachromis mix.depends on what you want.
