quick question, post can be deleted after a few answers so the overcrowding of "what can i fit" posts doesn't count me in..

Right now I've got a jag, texas, escondido, chocolate, salvini, argentea, surinamensis, and a giraffe cat, all but the texas/cat in the 5-6" range. They reside in a 110 long now, until the bigger tank gets set up, soon. No aggression really, and they all seem to hang out together. I will be tossing them all into the 180 in the next few weeks, probably for a couple years I would say.

I've always wanted a gt and an ornate bichir; you think I can slip them in? It will be ran by 2 fx5's and 80% w/c weekly. What do you guys think?

The chocolate and Geo are eventually going to the crap beat out of them by your current stock. Get rid of them and you might be able to add some of the other fish you want. But the tank will still be plenty full. Also depending upon what giraffe cat you have a 180 might not be big enough. They get anywhere form 18-30 inches depending upon which one it is.

The chocolate is super shy and runs a bit, but never gets messed with. The geo on the other hand I've had for several years, with plenty tankmates, and is quite aggro for an eartheater. The chocolate is the only one I have thought about removing, and down the road will probably do so. In return though I will HAVE to get another fish then!

The cat is the regular african giraffe, not the dwarf, and I am aware of his size requirements. I went with the 2' deep tank when his nose and fin finally fit the 18" footprint now.. I'm not into fish cruelty at all, hence why i'm questioning what I can actually get away with..

Not saying anything you are doing is wrong, just giving my opinion on your tankmates. If the Geo works, that's great! I would still be on the look out for trouble and have a backup plan for him incase he starts getting picked on. The chocolate I would remove pretty soon. The texas, escondido, salvini and argentea will eventually put a beating on him and could easily kill it quickly. The giraffe will be OK for a while in the 180g, but eventually it's not even going to be able to turn around. If you have not already purchased the tank I would look into something that is 30 inches wide to keep the giraffe long term. Otherwise at some point your are going to half to give it away.

Good luck

Well the way I go about getting tanks is upgrading when needed. If I went out and got a huge tank now, the emptyness of my little juvies in there would make me purchase way more fish than needed, and screw myself in the end.. The geo is the longest fish I've ever had, so if anything were too happen he would get his own tank.. I do have the 180 already, and knowing this hobby will upgrade in the future I'm sure. Just seeing if this combo will work for the next year or 2.. The chocolate does hold it's own in there, being the 2nd largest, but I have been thinking of trading it for one of the f0 green terrors at the shop. We will see, but I do appreciate the info man!

Understand. It's hard to not buy fish when a tank desn't look full. I think the Gt will work if you trade your chocolate for it.

Yes, silver saums are fairly rare and very stunning. Plus wild caught is the icing on the cake. I think that is a very fair deal for a pet store.

Definitely do that, and while you're at it try and sell your G. 'surinamensis'. Eartheaters do better in small shoals as they're a social cichlid. Being housed with a jag and other aggressive centrals isn't going to be an enjoyable experience for his or her entire life.
