I am going to stock a new 55G tank but am not sure what to stock it with yet.

I was thinking either:
1 Tiger Oscar and 1 Leopard Cactus Pleco

or

African Cichlid tank, maybe Mbuna? ( I have hard water)

or

1 Jack Dempsey and 1 Leopard Cactus Pleco

What do you guys think?

Do whatever your heart desires ;)

Thanks, that is super helpful!!

I'd say not an oscar...not in a 55g.

An african setup could be pretty sweet, but I've heard they're a little bit more taxing on the maintenance and water params.

I bet a jack dempsey would be a great 'centerpiece' fish for the tank. Here's what I'm doing in my 65...1 jack dempsey, two senegal bichirs, 8 tiger barbs, MAYBE a rubber lip pleco (depends on how it acts towards the 2 bichirs)

is it a 4' long tank? You could see how you feel about polypterus, they're pretty damn cool fish. If you're down for the challenge you could go with a discus community.

Fill the thing with guppies! Hundreds of them!

Out of those options I'd go with the 3rd option, but with an EBJD instead of a JD (a JD would outgrow a 55 after a while). The first stock will not work unless you can/will upgrade to a 75 gallon within the next year.

If I went with the JD, could I put 5-6 Tiger barbs in there too? Will a 4-5" JD eat the tiger barbs?

may not eat them, but could definately kill them. Of my 2 jacks, one is a psycho killer that as to have a 55 to himself, will kill any other thing. My female however tolerates other fish with no problems. If you have never kept a Jack before I would try a Jack, I love mine.

No, but tiger barbs are notorious fin nippers, so I wouldn't get them if I were you.

A lot of people here (and on other sites you can google up) will tell you that tiger barbs are only fin nippers if they're kept in to small of a shoal/school. If you keep at least 8 or so of them, they keep their shenanigans in the group.

I can't tell you this from personal experience, but I am intending to get a group of about 8 of them in the next month or so to go with my JD & two sens.

this will be fine
1 Tiger Oscar and 1 Leopard Cactus Pleco
