So I need to get a stock tank for my boy, it's been 4 months in the 6ft tank and he is getting to big. Nearly as long as the tank is deep now at about 16" and that was my limit, he needs a bigger home now. I was hoping to have a new place by now but don't so room is limited. I can either get a 6ft x 2ft stock pond made of metal for $205 and it would require a liner also so figure another $40 or so is what I think a good one goes for or I can get a Rubbermaid 300g Tub (5.5ftx5.5ft or so iirc) for $210 and not require a liner however it is slightly smaller.

Now, I am aware neither of these can hold the fish for life but I figure they buy me a fair amount more time since I think up to 2ft or a little over it would be comfortable in something that size seeing as he will be alone or only have maybe a tank mate or two at the most, and that is only if I ever get another big cat or grow one out.

It's gone from 3" in Mid Sept 08 to about 16" in mid January 09. I have been told the growth slows eventually, but when?

How long would either of those last me do you think? I am hoping at least a year.

Which would you go with and why?

Either setup will be filtered with a Rena XP3, 2 Large sponge filters hooked to large air pump for biological filtration and aeration as well as have a 700gph water pump hooked to a 29g tank I will fill with biological/mechanical filtration materials.

I have the 29g I just need to silicone in some trays and set it up like a giant filter. I plan to drill out the side and have a small pipe running back into the pond since the 29g will be mounted just above the pond it will just pour back in and the pump will pull water from the pond.

Is that enough filtration and such?

I was thinking 2 250w Stealth Heaters in the 29g, one on each side so the water is heated as it comes in and goes out (as needed when they turn on) since I can't put them in the tank at this point. He smashes them all around, I had to move the pair of 200w Stealths out of his current home into the sump (One on each side) because he kept knocking them around.

And not sure it matters but I plan to put a lid covering most of the top to deal with evaporation and humidity.

Thanks for any input you can provide, especially those with experience in this specific situation.

Thanks much.

I was hoping to hear at least a year so that works out.

-And yes I'll keep updating. Hoping to get it done in the next 3-4 weeks. I'll post pics when I do.

Well no pond yet but I think I may build a plywood pond with liner instead, it still wouldn't be big enough to be a life home but since I could build to room size it could be bigger. I am thinking 7ft x 4ft x 2.5ft, slightly over 500 gallons if filled to the top, likely closer to 425 gallons at 2.X ft water depth. It would be snug but fit better than a 6ft diameter one due to width, and I think cost should be similar. On a brighter note I've ordered all the supplies and they should be here next week.

This is what I went with

~Filter Media
4 x Blue Bonded filter pads
7 oz Filter Floss
125ct 2" Nanoballs
120 Scrubbies from Zennzzo
24oz Ceramic Media
20ct Bio Chem Stars

~Filters/Pumps
Whisper 40 Air pump w/ Airline, Splitter, Air Stone, and Oxygen Plus Bio Filter 7
Rena XP3 for Mech/Bio.
Quiet One Pump Model 3,000 (780gph)

~Heat
2 x 250w Stealths

I may add one more canister to the tank, depending how good the pump and home made filter work. I consider what I ordered a lot of media, hopefully it cuts it. Some of it will go in the XP3 as well though.
