Looking at stock tanks online for possibly a future sump. I read numerous postings of using galvanized stock tanks for koi but are they really safe? Also can you put bulk heads in for pluming it the rubber and galvanized ones? Do the rubber ones hold up well for several years. When I used to work a lot with Diary farmers the rubber ones only seemed to last a couple of years bu these were exposed to all the elements and cows.

I own several galvanized and plastic (Rubbermaid type) stock tanks. Galvanized do eventually rust in places, I also have challenges with seems and bottoms rusting with pinholes. Plastic tanks always seem to have issues with the plug and threads leaking.

That being said all my tanks are outdoors being used for their intended purpose (water supply for livestock). I would imagine your life span would double at a minimum if using them indoors.

Galvanized coating is not safe and the coating will break down and metal will rust. Look into tractor supply company I bought the big plastic holding tanks to hold my fish when I broke tank down

thanks for the input. I was looking at tractor supply. Can you put bulk heads on the rubber holding tank or do you have to use the drain it already has built in?

Go with the rubbermaid stock tanks. Indoors they last forever. You can used bulkheads or uniseals.

One of the lfs near me uses a huge stock tank for cycling live rock. They have a bulkhead threaded into the drain plug. Not sure what size bulkhead it is though. You could also use a Rubbermaid or sterlite tub as a sump.
