Been away from the hobby for a while, mainly kept various different types of Piranha, looking to get back into the hobby but limited to a 20-30 gallon tank due to space. Knowing that I can't keep Piranha in a 30 gallon tank, I'm looking for some ideas. I'm looking to keep something aggressive, preferably something solitary but open to suggestions. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Small cichlids maybe? I currently have a 29 gal with one blue acara and some tiger barbs in it, and I love it. This could be switch up any way you want really. Convict, other acaras, fire mouth, or a ram cichlid would probably work. Barbs could be subed out for a different type of schooling fish. Not sure what else you like, but just thought Id put out the idea. :)

Thanks for the suggestion Deansy, always liked Tiger Barbs, an idea I was already throwing around, going to look up some the other fish you mentioned. Keep the suggestions coming! ;)

Firemouth, convict, acara as far as cichlids go. Why not some figure 8 puffers to add personality.

Can a Firemouth be kept on it's own? Everything I've been reading online has suggested pairs.

I thought about a figure 8 puffer, somewhat hesitant since they require a brackish setup.

Tetrodon Baileyi... Most agressive fish I have ever had. Anything that went in the tank was attacked, hands, fingers, water extraction pipe... Total terror.

Plus 1 on the hairy puffer, as long as you don't mind much activity as they are lurkers...
Exodons is a good one too...
Another option could be nandus nebulous, an awesome little pred that will only take live food, could add some small cats and plec then like a spotted pim larger corys and zebra pleco.
A 5 star general, aka 5 spot jewel cichlid, these are piscovore with attitude.
Few more ideas.

Exodons can be tricky to find where I am.

Tetrodon Baileyi...has the look of a potato lol...would prefer something more active and visually appealing.

Some of the cichlids mentioned seem like a good option. Leaning towards that idea, maybe a firemouth with some tetra's or just go with a few GBRs...

How about belonsox Belizanus aka pike top minnow. Awesome livebearer predator with teeth to show. Don't get too big. Males max @ 4" and female max @ 8". Be careful they are cannibals. Add a small school of cories for bottom.
