Stocking 40g long

Anything small- ancistrus, hypancistrus (L270, L333), peckolitas (L134).

How's a 40 long different from a 40 breeder? The latter has a bigger base (surface area) which is better for more territiories.

If you have live bearers you probably have smaller fish. If you are purely looking for algae control, I would go for otocinclus. A shoal of them would clean up most small tanks nicely. They are very reasonably priced, cute, and easy to take care of. Stay small even for tiny tetra tanks.

clown or bushy nose plecs might work well on a budget:)

If I change my fish into a bit larger like angelfish or rams what would u consider?

If the angles are well taken care of, otos are still a good idea. Bristlenose will be my next choice if you are dealing purely with the brown or regular green algae. If you have other types of algae, I would go with at least couple SAE (Siamese Algae Eater) Make sure it's the true SAE, with more of a regular mouth instead of a sucker, also has the black bar that goes through the tail fin. The true SAEs will take care of most algae problems including hair and brush algae.
