Hello,

My first post here, but after lurking for a while, I think this is the place to find the answer to my questions.

I'm starting a 90g CA tank and am still trying to figure out what to put in it. Granted, 90g is small compared to some on this site, but it's almost 2x bigger than the info I see on other sites with people wondering if they can keep a pair of Jags and a pair of Doviis in a 55g! ;)

This was my original thinking (sorry, not familar with the latin names):
1 - Green Texas
1 - JD
1 - salvini
1 - Jewel cichlid
- dithers?

But as I do research, it seems that list may not be doable when they get to full size?

If not that, I was thinking of a Firemouth set up, but am not sure what would be compatible.

I am not looking to pair up or mate the fish, and I want to stick with CA cichlids because my water is more conducive to their care (high ph and basic; as opposed to lower ph and acidic).

Any and all help/suggestions is appreciated.

And just so you know, this may be my first go around with CAs, but I've kept aquaria my entire life. I currently have a 90g mbuna tank and just recently broke down my marine tank after six years.

The Firemouth is a fairly mild mannered fish, and would be a great choice for a community. I keep mine with cichlids of similar temperament. Severum, Eartheater, and Blood Parrot are all pretty mild mannered. J.D. may work, but it depends on personality.
Some people have had luck with Convicts, and Firemouth. Cons can be evil when breeding though. I hope I could help some.

Thanks Betta.

I forgot to add one more thing: I want to stay away from convicts as well.

It's funny. Even though Firemouths are from CA, it seems they are better suited to be from SA, based on aggression, size, temperment, etc.

One more thing to consider. Although the tank is 90g, it's actually a 5-footer. Don't know if that affects my stocking list or not, but figured someone would eventually ask. :)

i think you could do that stocklist however, IME and others have said this as well, carpintis and JDs dont seem to get along very well for some reason (perhaps they look to similar with their spangling?) but yeah so i would do one or the other and then the other fish you listed, it being 5ft definitely gives you a lot more room to play around with if it were me i would do a Carpintis and GT and then a school of tiger barbs as dithers, if your really wanting the sal then you could do the carpintis or JD with the sal and you could do silver dollars or something instead of tiger barbs (note about tiger barbs: they must be kept in schools of AT LEAST 6 or they will nip the hell out of your fishes' fins :()

Thanks Sarah.

Yeah, I've wondered about the carpintis and the JD. I thought they looked similar.

So would I be limited to a JD or Texas with a sal and dithers? Or could I add a couple other cichlids?

Do you think I could add a FM to that mix, or would it just be picked on and cower under cover and rarely come out?
