stocking a 20 gallon high

what are you in to? you can do neon tetras, or rams, apistolgammas, feeders, list goes on.
 
Stick with what you would stock a 10. I would stick away from apistos, unless you only had a pair. Vertical swimming space doesn't mean much to many fish with the exception of angels, discus, etc. May some cory cats on the bottom and any choice of small schooling fish for the rest (tetras, danios, raspoboras, or even guppies).

Of you could be cool and start a dwarf shrimp tank!
 
a pair of dwarf cichlids and a small school of tetras is a good choice, the species are of your personal choosing, but I'd go with rams
 
pair of bolivian rams and maybe a school of 5 or so neons, cardinals or rummynose? With any of these fish have problems with shrimp?
