Hey Everyone! First post on the angelfish thread. Have loved cichlids for a long time, but have mostly kept bigger aggressive central American cichlids. Been a long time (like 10+ years at least) since I have tried a peaceful community tank and to say the least I'm a bit rusty. I have a 29 gallon planted tank I am trying to establish and just bought 3 little marble veil angels yesterday. They are barely bigger than a quarter, fins and all. I have 4 platy, 4 albino cory cats, and a male betta. I'm trying to make the tank kind of an Amazon biotope theme. I was wanting to add a few bleeding heart tetra too this week, say maybe 6 of them. Anyway... Just wondering how to best direct the stocking in a 29. I have read keeping just 3 angels is "dangerous" and I'm willing to take my chances so far. I did it before with 3 angels in a 27 gallon hexagon and that worked just fine. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

When the angels get bigger, you'll have some aggression issues. You could keep a mated pair in a tank that size, but the 3rd wheel is going to get roughed up. If you want the tetras, I'd rehome the platys & you'll be fine bio wise. The betta should be fine for a while. The angels might tear it up when they get some size on them though - keep an eye on it.

Well interesting you say a 3rd wheel. I came home last night, looked in the tank and one of the angels was stuck to the filter intake. Don't know if it was aggression or what the deal was. I also bought 6 bleeding heart tetra yesterday afternoon. By the end of the night 2 of those were stuck on the filter intake with the angel not looking good. Now this morning, I don't know if any of the bleeding hearts are alive. There's at least 4 gone. The tetras looked like they were missing some scales and had some mildly tattered fins. Are platy that nippy? Do you think the platy did it to the tetras? Odd....

Just set up tank or is it cycled?

Been set up for a few months. Haven't had much but about 4-5 platy in it, but it's been set up for awhile. Been trying to plant it and have the sand in it since beginning of February.

I wouldn't think its the platys. LFS angels can be hit or miss, tetras too for that matter. I've had a few drop dead in QT tanks for no apparent reason.

Have you checked your water params? Thats where I would start.

Is that a marineland 350?

Yep... It is. Is it too much? It may be overkill on the 29 but it's what I got.

I need to check the params. I don't want to get any more fish till I do. I wouldn't have thought it was the platy either. I mean they're platy.... The tetras did seem to be missing a few scales and their tales were a little tattered. There's a male betta in there too. But he never seems too bad. The tetra and the angels are both just about an inch long. Hardly full grown. I know the fish came from Seagrest farms and arrived at the store just Tuesday. I made sure I floated the fish for a good 20 minutes and slowly dripped some tank water into a water pitcher with the fish in the pitcher to try and acclimate them.... I never have had to do that with fish. I floated them and let them go. Keep the theories coming. I kind of wouldn't mind removing the platy anyway as they just don't fit the mold I'm going for.

Could throw the platy in with my red devil...
