I have a 40 gal breeder and i was thinking about making it a planted tank and put a pair of salivini in it or a ebjd and a regular jd female . which way i go i also want some type of schooling fish so i was thing about some tiger barbs or green tiger barbs in there with the jds or sals

planted won't work with either of those fish, I would do ebjd and jd personally because of the following reasons:

1.) Salvini are colorful, but as aggressive and annoying as a convict, with a breeding pair you might still run into problems in a 40 (I know guys who had trouble with them in 55 gallons +).
2.) EBJD are much more rare and expensive, if you breed them then you will have tons of cash, but be prepared to buy the necessary initial ebjd as its quite pricey.
3.) EBJD look really beautiful, much better than salvini IMO. If it were up to me I would get one of those beauties if I had to restock all over again.

Thats my advice, but its also your tank and your opinion, what do you prefer?

i have all my south americans in planted tanks ... driftwood will help your water suit them plants do extremly well for structure and your fry eco complete is imo the best substrate ever for adults to dig their nests go with the planted tank... they will dig it up tho so just have patience

I like the EBJD's too. They're super colorful too. IMO I've had better luck with discus, but that tank seems a bit too small for that. Planted tanks are always harder to stock. I've only done one, and I had a hell of a time with it. Never did it again.:irked:
