Right now I've just got one senegal bichir and a rubber lip pleco in a 20gal tank with some shrimp and snails. I'm working on getting my 70gallon set up (money is the issue :nilly:)

I want to have more than just bichirs in the tank (and its only 38" long, so I don't want to overcrowd the bottom). I kind of want to try and keep it as an African tank, so here's what I'm thinking...this is without a whole lot of research, just a quick looking around with a general idea of what might go together.

Two Senegal Bichirs
One African Butterfly
One African Brown Knife
Two Leopard Ctenopoma

As I understand it...the butterfly and clown knife should co-exist with the bichirs (thats what I've seen some people here say) and I think the leopards will be ok since they are more of a disc shape and probably won't be small enough to get eaten?

Can I comfortably house more than this? Are there any glaring conflicts? Are there any better suggestions? I'm open to cichlids as well, but like I said, I'm kind of wanting to keep this as an african only tank...the idea of that just seems cool to me.

And the other question...obviously I don't want to keep that pleco with my bichirs, should the rubber lip stay small enough to keep in the 20 gallon? Its my wife's fish so I'll have an EXTREMELY hard time getting rid of it, and she's already annoyed enough that I'm telling her it won't coexist with my bichir(s) :nilly:

I can't figure out how to edit:nilly:

So, I've basically scrapped that idea (conversation with the wife:grinno:) and now we're thinking about an african cichlid setup. What are my options? I'm a little more willing to bend on the strictly african setup (I think jack dempsey's are freakin sweet:drool:) but I would still kind of like to keep it all african.

I've noticed substrates sold specifically for cichlids to keep the PH (or something) where it needs to be for cichlids...what sort of different water parameters do they require?

Give me some recommendations....thanks dudes:headbang2
