So I have decided that when I get a large community SA tank setup and move everyone from my 75 into that tank, I want to setup a more aggressive tank in the 75.

I want to stock around a single white saum female. I want to keep it SA and would prefer something of equal aggression and equal or lesser size. Suggestions?

i have 2 small brasiliensis now, they seem to hold their own,not getting pushed around with chocolates, blue acaras.another acara to try is diadema

I have no experience with santo.would they be better in groups? I have heard that GT and blue acaras can be hit or miss together looking so similar...if you try it maybe go for a female

I don't have Satanoperca experience either, but I've always thought they were cool looking fish. As far as groups, I have no idea. I have seen both groups and singles and they appear to be fine either way.

Now that I think of it, blue acaras and GTs do cross breed a lot, so I think I should avoid that combo. Especially since true blue acaras that don't have any GT in them tend to be much more passive than GTs.

It's generally recommended that Satanoperca be kept in groups, although I can't say whether a lone individual would suffer. However, they are not particularly aggressive - if your White Saum is feisty, it may be too much for a Satanoperca to handle. What about a medium-sized pike cichlid, or Geophagus brasiliensis - they are robust and can hold their own. Same goes for Krobia xinguensis (red-cheek Krobia). You could also try some Aequidens species, like metae or tetramerus.

Okay, I will pass on the Satanoperca then.

What is the size range of a medium sized pike? I can find pikes that only reach 4-5" and I can find pikes that reach 16-18", but nothing in between.

I have never been a fan of bras geos. Just not my thing for some reason.

I actually have four Krobia xinguensis that will eventually go into the large SA tank with some Retroculus lapidifers.

I might do the Aequidens metae. They look pretty cool.

Do you think some Cichlasoma dimerus might work?

I don't have much experience with larger pikes - only the dwarf varieties. Consider checking the Crenicichla subforum for recommendations. I'm not sure whether C. dimerus would work - aren't they a species that tolerates (and perhaps requires) a cool down period? Perhaps it depends on where they were collected - might be fine. G. brasiliensis come in a variety of color varieties, but to each his own in terms of preference. I really like the colors on this female I've had a for a while.

A bellycrawler would be a great pike for that tank. Mine is a good 8" and generally minds its business but every once in a while it will chase my 9" melanurus all over the tank. Had a jurupari once and it did fine by itself, actually schooled with my silver dollars, but better suited for angels and discus then saums. Personally I wouldn't do a blue acara, a pair of saums just seems more interesting than 1 of each. A 75 may be too small for both but a meyesi or kraussi would be a nice contrast to the saum.
