So I am getting a used 125 here in a few days. I am going to reseal it and cycle it, so it won't actually be ready for 6-8 weeks, but I like to have a game plan, so I am asking for some advice.

I want to stick to SA cichlids for the most part, but will consider peaceful CAs. I prefer fish with some nice color. Below is my current stock. Most are babies in the 1-3" range and a few are in the 4-5" range. I want to spread these fish out over the two 125s and figure out what (if anything) I can add from there. Not all of these fish are currently living together because of some of their size differences.

Current stock:
6 geophagus red head tapajos (2" each)
A heckelii (3.5")
A super red severum (5")
2 notatus severum (1.5" each)
2 rotkeil severum (2.5-3" each)
A festivum (2.5")
Four wild turquoise acaras (3.5-4" each and two are a confirmed pair)
6 rainbow fish for dithers

The pair of acaras will et their own 55 to breed in.

Here are my ideas for the first 125:
3 severum (super red and rotkeils)
Festivum
Heckelii
2 acaras
Rainbows

The second would be:
6 geos
2 notatus severum

I think the first tank is pretty complete. I don't think I want to add anything to the tank because of the ultimate full grown sizes. The second tank I want to add some dithers or 1-2 top dwelling cichlids. I am also thinking about adding a school of 6 cories, but my concern is if 3" cories can live/survive in a tank with 6-8" geos and 10-12" severum, plus whatever else I might add.

Thoughts?

A little out of the box, but you could try some Swordtails as top dwellers. It's work well for me with a mix similar to your 1st tank (well, it worked well until i added an oscar to the mix, then they were lunch). They can add some nice color and definitely stick to the top. Hard to find other stuff that top dwells.

Agreed. Having a hard time finding something that will stay up on top full time. Even the rainbows I have are not staying up top very much. They are great dithers, but the top of my 125 feels so empty. :(

If you can found some healthy ones and don't think they would get eaten then some hatchetfish would definitely stay at the top of the tank and are a fun/pretty edition the ones I've kept I have never seen leave the top of the tank

So the deal on the 125 fell through. The guy brought someone over to look at it and the person knocked it over and completely smashed the front panel. The guy offered to sell it to me with stand and tank for $100, but the glass panel replacement is still going to cost me over $150 to have a special order done. :( Plus all the time and other materials I would need to reseal it.

Anyways, I have decided that I want to upgrade beyond a 125 and look for something in the 200+ gallon range.

In the 125, I have:
3 severum (2 Rotkeil and the super red)
Festivum
Heckelii
2 acaras
Rainbow fish

The 200+ would then have:
2 notatus severum
6 geo red head tapajos

Thinking of adding to the 200+:
6 geo parnaibae (don't have yet)
15-20 swordtails

I am thinking that I would want to add a group of 4-6 geophagus. I am considering winemilleri instead because they are on the rarer side, but the parnaibae give more blue contrast to the red that my tapajos will have, which I am thinking I will like better than the winemilleri and because they don't grow as large as winemilleri, they would leave a bit more stock room too.

I will definitely need some top dwellers for the 200+ and I am seriously considering swordtails (I especially like lyretail mollies/plates). With these arriving in several different colors, I doubt I would have trouble picking out some good top dwellers.

Think I can get in anything else?
