I bought my sister a 55g for her birthday and she would like to stock it with SA cichlids but I'm not sure what would fit. She wants nice colors and patterns. Any advice?

hmmm dwarf cichlids would be awesome, some rams, maybe even some blue acaras or smiling acaras

Same thing I was going to suggest...german blue rams or any other ram, blue acaras, rainbowfish, gouramis, other dwarf fish

thanks for the help, I was thinking rams but how many would fit?

also look up the species in latacara.keyhole cichlids, another smaller size fish is the kribnesis, but they are african riverine

rams are awsome for a cichlid cummunity then you got danios you could put in for top swimmers which they are cool too with the rams

the size of a ram is in no way the way to limit the capacity, if you intend on keeping females only then you can fit maybe 3-4 in a 55g, but for such small fish a male will keep a very large territory and will defend it viciously against other males or even other females when it has a mate. i had success keeping 2 pairs in a 40 gallon breeder and even then there were some fights, be careful with rams, I would keep one breeding pair with some other acaras, you can even put a blue acara in there and some other cichlids, it will make the bond of the rams strong and make them great parents. they always show curious activity when they have larger fish around. just keep it to the less aggressive side

danios are from across the planet, i believe he is looking for strictly SA.

I'd do a pair of rams a blue acara and if you can find them some smiling acaras and some dithers like bloodfin tetras, much too fast for some cichlids and fairly aggressive when in large enough a group
