Hello Peeps

Afraid another stocking question, slight variation, any advice/opinion is appreciated.

I have – 1 adult EBJD (7”), 2 geophagus red-head Tapajo’s (2”), 1 red spotted severum (2”) and about 8 clown loaches (3-4”). All in a 6 foot 150ish gallon tank. Thinking about adding 1 or 2 more red-heads, but apparently they get big, so prob 2 at the very most.

My criteria is CA/SA colourful cichlids, that could work LT in the tank.

Green Terror – heard that a ‘real’ GT are very hard to find and not great colours either. Looking at a gold saum (with orange fin tips I think). This would be the most aggressive fish in the tank, is there any alternatives that I could consider?

Choc vs Oscar - Contemplating getting a chocolate cichlid as I’ve heard similar personality to an O. Also have heard you can use a bigger range of dithers. Anyone with any experience of the two? Any thoughts on chocolate cichlids?

Any other cichlids that ppl can recommend?

Seeing that you already have more of a peaceful tank I would stick with other more peaceful cichlids. Another species of earth eater (gymnogeophagus, satanoperca, geophagus, etc), maybe an Uaru or 2, or even angels.

Thanks for the replies. I think a Salvini maybe a little too aggressive, but definitely a lovely looking cichlid.

Re - peaceful - I never really thought about it like that (always planned semi-aggressive), but as I want the tank to work LT, maybe it would be best to go with some more peaceful cichlids instead of risking the GT. I'm not keen to get too many earth-eaters. I plan to have 4-5 total, maybe 3 more of another variety or just bump up the numbers of Tapajo's. Reason being, I have a fair few clown loaches and the empty spaces are in the middle/top of the tank.

Instead of a GT I'm thinking about an Acara instead. Does anyone have any suggestions as too cichlids that will primarily spend their time in the middle/top of the tank? (Not crazy about Angelfish)

cheers ppl

acara are cool but they are semi-aggressive . what about a keyhole cichlid.

Bare with me cuz my brain isnt quite turned on yet. I know you said your not crazy about Earth Eaters but how about Acarichthys heckelii. They'd have a different look but I will say I have heard some can be aggressive.

For other non cichlids how about congo tetras or rainbow fish? Just a though.

Cheers Abarilot, I'll check them out the Heckelli when I get home. Agreed, rainbow or congo tetra would make excellent dithers/target fish and would roam the mid-top of the tank. Food for thought...

Why not try an go for a biotope? I.e all the fish from a certain stream or river etc.

I agree the Green Terror (Gold Saum) is going to be more aggressive than what you are looking for… as well as the Salvini…

For a fish tank… yours would be considered “semi aggressive”… for a Cichlid tank it could be considered “docile”… it just depends what we are comparing it to…

Blue Acaras look a lot like Gold Saums and are less aggressive… Uaras, Keyholes, Firemouth, another Geo species… all come to mind as potentials (most if not all have already been suggested though)…

I also think an Oscar (or Choc) would do fine…
