So i sold my stingray and im trying to decide on direction for tank. Right now im between picking a type of cichlid or doing something like a big school of barbs and clown loaches. Open to any ideas just want to setup a big community tank

Spanner barbs

How about a Asian tank with eels, datnoids, barbs, and clown loaches. Or a amazon tank with geos, pike cichlids, uaru, severums, oscars and a flagtail. These are just ideas but you have many options, what type of fish do you like

I would go for the amazon tank, they have so many colourful fish, the geos can look amazing as well as the pikes, you will also get interesting personality from the oscars and other cichlids. As for the schooling fish I can’t think of any that would be big enough from SA but if you don’t mind about where they come from then rainbow fish or denison barbs would work

Why not an West African riverine set-up? I say this because it is my next project and is on the brain. I cannot help you with the larger fish ( Im sure there are many people that can), but I can with the tetras. African tetras are (for the most part) really great schoolers and larger than their South American counterparts. Here are a few example of West African tetras that I have in my 180g.

Alestopetersius nigropterus

I just got these and they are young juveniles so their adult colors are not evident yet. Here is a picture ( not my own) of adult coloration.

Spanner barbs, tyre track eel and a Asian suncat. Plus A nice datnoid.
Asian themed monster tank.

I like the last three suggestions a lot. Itd be hard to choose between them. Id probably just do all of them minus the dat.

Pictus cats, spanner barbs, african tetras, and chalceus for a sweet mixed community.
