Hey all!
while in the process of resetting up my 75 gallon tank, i was wondering if i could get some fun suggestions for it. it previously held african cichlids and at the moment i want to try something different.

I love oddball fish, my fiance loves colorfull cichlids.

we both agree on wanting a bichir. as to what species i know we want one of the smaller guys under 20 inches.

I was also thinking of getting a school of 5 clown loaches. i know i time they will need a bigger home, but when that time comes i will adress that. either by getting a bigger tank, or by trading them in.

When i was growing up my family had a tank with a young alligator gar. though i love the gar family i know that i could never have one for long in this tank. are there any false gars out there that have the coloration and body shape of any of the spotted gars?

thanks
ashley

thanks wingate for the suggestion of the mosaic gar.

from what i have been reading it is a toss up as to keep them singlely or in groups. does anyone want to expand on this?
could i keep any of the other false gars with these guys?

being on the topic of "gars" has anyone heard if a chocolate nose gar? years ago when i was just getting into keeping fish my mom was going to get me one had we not had our gator gar. unfortunatly i never saw a pic of one or one in person even. any ideas as to what the species is?

thanks
ashley

Here we go, if you want an oddball aquarium do something like this
1) senegal Birchir(or Albino)
3) Needlenose (gar) fish
1) mosaic gar
1) green Terror
6) giant danios

you will eventually need to buy a bigger tank but that would be a mad oddball/south american set up, when you buy a bigger tank get like a 275 gallon and add a silver arowana and you would have a mad prehistoric tank and maube add a few datnoids that would be quite an amazing tank what ever you decide to go with id like to see some pics

Hujeta gars will work :D

so will eels..

Possibly a galaxy eel? They grow to 50 cm, are peaceful, have AMAZING colouration and don't need live food :D

Maybe some cats from the hoplosternum family would work..

sure pop tart wrapper works wonders. sew them together and you have a nice space blanket. they're hardly useful other wise, lol.

ok
1x senegal bichir
5x clown loach
4x denisons barbs
1x bristle nose pleco L144
1x mosaic gar
1x galaxy eel
1x GT or EBJD

would this list work together? at least in that small of a tank with out behavior issues? filtration ownt be an issues as there is an additional 20 gallons in the sump with a wet dry, on top of my ehiem pro II.

Gulpers all the way you could probably get away with a trio of them but beware their bio load if you feed them heavily. or maybe some nice south americans( JD an oscar blue acara's etc) Delhezi or senegal bichir are also great choices. Or a Lima shovelnose and a few (2 or 3) slightly bigger south americans or mid dwellers
