Hi all

I have an empty 5 x 2 x 2 tank. I'm trying to come up with something different. Over the years I've kept your standard " mixed" tropical tanks. Pond (which I still have with koi ) , marine , cold-water. Never brackish & no full on cichlid tanks.

So I'm open for suggestions :) Also open to upgrades in a few years time if need be but not over 7ft x 2ft x 2ft due to space. But I'd like to keep the 5ft for a bit at least . No upgrading next year sort of thing.

Aulonchara and small haps,
goldfish and hoplos or yellow bullheads,
Brackish with soles, four eyed fish, mangroves and others,
All cyprinid tank.
Low tech iwagumi with rainbows and ctenapoma
Bichirs
Tanganyika tank with cyathopharyx, cyprichromis, n. Brevis and xenotilapia
Plenty more. Others will say stuff. 150 is really big for anything normal, but too small for gears, arowanna and stuff like that.

I don't mind upgrading in a couple of years to a 7ft x 2ft x 2ft . But I'll certainly look into some of those now.

Fahaka puffer... don't over think it just get one... they are awesome! They get large but can live in a 150g for a good few years, are very interactive and fascinating to keep as a pet rather than simply a living decoration.

How about some Archerfish? There are freshwater species such as T. Blythii and Microlepis. You could set the tank up with plants and driftwood. Keep the water level just a little bit lowered so the driftwood extends out of the water for crickets to sit on and watch them spit!

Archer fish do sound an interesting possibility. Although I ask myself do i want a house load of crickets again :/

I kept reptiles for many years & I've lost count how many times I awoke after drifting off on the sofa to find a cricket sat merrily chirping away on the side of my face! Unfortunately they will escape vivs , pots ect .

I'll certainly add the puffer as something to , I'm guessing he'd be solitary only ? Or are there any tank mates suitable?

Lol yeah I hear you on the crickets. Although my archers eat pellets and frozen foods as a staple. I buy crickets occasionally for them.

Generally solitary... they can be kept with other fish but it is always a risk ( I have mine in a 220g with a number of large cichlids) if things go wrong the fahaka can kill or mutilate other fish VERY quickly.

Crickets are a menace! I feed them to my snakeheads and they still escape! I have no idea how they get out of the water and the tank but I have found them running around the floor of the house.... the misses was not amused!!

Lucky for me I am the Mrs :) However after years of crickets & locusts climbing the walls I'm not sure I could put up with it again. There's always a male hiding somewhere who's chirpping away where you can't get him at 3am. They're definitely little ninja escapists.
