Any stocking ideas for a 20 gal? Should be colorful/pretty or really cool
( not for me )
Also any filter recommendations? (Not hob)

Yea but hobs aren’t really aesthetically pleasing and don’t clean as much as canisters, I was just gonna say to get a canister but slow the flow, also increase they decide to increase tank size in the future they wouldn’t need to get a new filter cycling but I wanted a second opinion, is 1 month cycling good enough? (Seeded with bb)On a 20 a HOB is all you really need - anything else is either going to be overkill or cost more than you have to spend.
As for stocking, it depends on what is wanted. For simple colorful fish, a shoal of neons + a betta or dwarf gourami as a centerpiece is a very good looking display.
What about Turkana jewels? The only cichlids I would put in there are dwarf cichlids like rams or apistos (there are other species too, but generally not as easy to come by).
The filter isn’t really the main means of cleaning - regular water changes will do far more than any filter (and there are many better HOB than the standard topfin and aqueons).
A month cycling should be enough, monitor params to ensure that ammonia is being processed.
But the turkana I’ve read are the smallest jewelToo large - most jewels get around 6 inches.
If your friend wants cichlids, Shell Dweller cichlids are an attractive option but can be expensive.
Some of the dwarf acaras (laetacara, nannacara) are doable, but again expensive.
I also showed the honey gourmais like a day ago and they liked them too could there be more than 1?Still too large and active for the tank - and aggressive. Something similar to a 40B would be a good starting point for a pair of jewels.
As for the gourami, they can get aggressive with each other, but I would think a 20 offers enough territory for 2 to coexist (with enough hiding spots). One thing to consider with them is that they are very prone to iridovirus (dwarf gourami disease), which has no cure and is always fatal. Honey gouramis don’t get it as frequently, but aren’t as colorful.
They should work out the same as the dwarves. Two to three would be fine with enough territory.I also showed the honey gourmais like a day ago and they liked them too could there be more than 1?
