I have got a solid go-ahead to set up an aquarium by my roommates! Yay! I've measured out the area, and it could fit a 50 to 75 gallon aquarium quite nicely.

And now for the fun part. Since it's going to be out in the main part of the apartment, I would like something interesting and engaging. Ideally, I would like to do a bit of amateur/low-light aquascaping, and have a community tank. But a community with a few cool oddballs. Of course, nothing is set in stone, and you could always persuade me to change my mind. ;) Another idea I was considering was to get a couple of nice, fat fancy goldfish (I miss my guys back in Edmonton already), but it would be nice to keep something I haven't yet/haven't kept in a while.

I'm just sort of drawing a blank here. So, give me your ideas!

id go with the 75 all the way.. biggest is best! and i dont know too much about oddballs that i should give my recomendations so ill let that up to someone with more exp.! but goldies are always an antique choice if anything, but some african Mbunas would be awesome

You can do some nice low-light planted tanks

Wolffish
Dwarf pike cichlids
Bichir
depending whats legal in your area dwarf snakeheads I've heard would fit this bill.

atm I have a dwarf pike cichlid/bichir set-up w/ some low light plants in my 40B and enjoy it alot. Everyone is very sassy and out there. what the bichir lack in color the pike make up for. Also fairly affordable and hearty fish ime.

Mini, what kind of dwarf pikes do you keep? I've been really wanting a pike but can't find small ones.

You have quite a few options :)

If you want a lot of fish and movement, then you most likely would like to stay with community fish. If you are more into "unique" and can settle with 2 to 6 fish, then Cichlids or what the others have suggested.

Maybe for your oddball, you could look into Plecos. Stay away from Common Plecos. Bristlenose is a good choice, it stays relatively small. But, there are several varieties available and always make an awesome fish to keep!

Maybe a couple of Mystery Snails to round it out?

Another thought is to go brackish and put in a few Dwarf Puffers and maybe a couple of Archer fish?

Whatever you go with, add a variety of live plants and enjoy :)

Yeah, I'll defiantly aim for the 75! From my price scouting, there doesn't seem to be much of a Price jump between the two.

Hmm, I do like the looks of birchirs. Any suggestions on good species for that tank size? I'll have to look up if snakeheads are legal to keep. I love me some channa bleheri!

Having so many options is the problem, haha!

I had bristle noses in with my goldies, and they are pretty adorable. I've seen many pictures of amazing looking plecos here that I would love to keep (most probably out of my price range, haha). As much as I like the commons, I've seen enough 1-2 footers to stay away!

I am wondering about leopard ctenopomas... are they ok in a communal tank?
